MATT SCOBEY - Marfa, TX

Born in Danville, Illinois 1979. Matt Scobey received a bachelor’s Degree in liberal arts from Colorado State University. After college he worked as a studio assistant for artist Ray King in Philadelphia before spending many years in Denver, Colorado working primarily in graphic design, illustration, and publishing . He participated in and contributed to all levels of the Denver art scene from DIY warehouse spaces, commercial galleries and working with Denver Art Museum, Public Art Denver Arts and Venues, and Museum of Contemporary Art Denver. Since moving to Texas he has worked as a guide and docent with Chinati and Judd Foundations and completed restoration work on Dan Flavin’s untitled (Marfa project) and Robert Irwin’s untitled (dawn to dusk) at Chinati Foundation.

Matt Scobey lives and works in Marfa, Texas, where he participates in self-iniated projects exploring material, transmission, finish, site and scale. He creates work in series, installations, and furniture focused on framing encounters with material and space.

His studio practice generally results in stacked sculptural work in concrete, stone, wood and acrylic. Works often incorporate material that transmit and reflect natural light, so the experience of the work is determined by the position of the sun and viewer.

Recent interests include working at a larger scale and in materials that express temporal and durational natural processes like oxidation and erosion. The increase in scale has led to experimentation in engineering, armature, and anchoring without losing focus on the role of stance, color, and balance. Some works are able to be moved, shipped, and reinstalled, while others are intended for permanent placement.
